A Book Of Sleep

All night, a watchful owl quietly observes how other animals sleep.

Author/Illustrator: Il Sung Na

Length: 34 pages, between 4-14 words per page

Word Choice: Simple, poetically structured phrases describe different ways animals sleep. The repetition of ‘some sleep…’ and ‘while…’ add rhythm to a rhymeless prose.

Illustrations: The pictures are artistic and dreamy.  There is a lot of dark/light contrast in each picture that will catch the attention of babies.

Read-aloud-ability: This soothing board book is short and sweet.  The rhythm of the prose is helpful when one is reading it repeatedly.

Additional thoughts: This book is unique in the bedtime board book genre in that it does not involve a parent putting a child to bed in it.  The title really does sum it up this gentle book. Though it describes ‘sleep’ not ‘bedtime’ it is quite effective at ‘lulling’ and ‘calming’ little ones at bedtime.
