Bear Snores On

As bear sleeps through the winter, his friends escape the cold by partying in his den. A cute rhyming tale about friendship.

Author: Karma Wilson

Illustrator: Jane Chapman

Length: 40 pages, approx 5-30 words per page

Ages: 2-5

Word Choice: This story has superb rhyme and metre.  It also has a nice balance of descriptive words and sounds and repetition which add to the fun of the story.  It also introduces words that are unusual in a book for preschoolers, such as ‘dank’ ‘lair’ and ‘wren’.  After reading this story my 2 year old became obsessed with creating his own ‘lair’.

Illustrations: Cute and imaginative paintings add life and charm to the animated text.

Read-aloud-ability: This book is well designed for reading aloud.  The author has paid attention to rhythmic details that make it enjoyable to read aloud repeatedly.

Additional thoughts: This is a fun bedtime story, but it is also suitable for play time too.  You can also find copies of this in a board book version–the text is unchanged.
