In this sweet touch-and-feel board book, a barn owl tours the farm as the animals settle down for the night.
Author: Patricia Hegarty
Illustrator: Thomas Elliott
Length: 24 pages, between 3-56 words per page
Word Choice: Gentle rhyming narration characterizes this soothing bedtime story.
Illustrations: The paintings are cute and the addition of touch-and-feel aspects of each page are tastefully done.
Read-aloud-ability: For toddlers younger than 18 months, the text is too long and wordy—as most won’t have the patience to not turn the page until after 56 words! But aside from that, the rhymes and rhythm read well and are quite suitable for an older toddler who enjoys longer stories.
Additional thoughts: As with other books of this genre, there is not much of a story—it is more of a poetic lullaby. Although the text is long, the touch-and-feel aspects of this book effectively make it interesting and engaging for babies and toddlers.
