Owl has a balloon. Monkey really wants it. Will he trade? A fun story about failed persuasion.
Author: Ariel Bernstein
Illustrator: Scott Magoon
Length: 40 pages, 1-45 words per page
Word Choice: This story is mainly a conversation between the two main characters with the inclusion of some of their thoughts and reasonings. The wording is suitable for a beginner reader, the most difficult word being “perfectly”. It is also a fun book for introducing adjectives and the concept of similarities (or matching) to preschoolers or kindergarteners.
Illustrations: The bright, bold paintings depict the story well. The facial expressions of the characters are superb.
Read-aloud-ability: Though some of the pages have more text than others, since the wording is so humorous these pages don’t seem long. This is an entertaining book to read aloud, even repeatedly!
Additional thoughts: Having taught my preschooler to share, I now get to help him to learn how to respond when someone just won’t share. This book provides an amusing way to talk about the fact that persuasion doesn’t always work the way you want it to.
