The Story of Ferdinand

Long ago in Spain, a blithe and gentle bull mistakenly got chosen for a bull fight—all because of a bee!!

Author: Munro Leaf

Illustrator: Robert Lawson

Length: 76 pages, 3-50 words per page

Ages: 4-10

Word Choice: This is a simple and charming story.   The debonair storytelling is quite amusing. We liked how the narrator directs the occasional question to the reader in an lighthearted way.  This book is directed at elementary aged kids, but many of the words would be too difficult for a beginner reader.

Illustrations:  The colourless drawings are full of detail and expression.  We were quite entertained by the picture of the five men who come to choose a bull to fight.

Read-aloud-ability: This is a great book to read aloud.  This engaging story is a good length and we have read it many times together.

Additional thoughts:  I thought my kids would be too young for this story, but they quite enjoyed it.  My toddler liked the pictures and finding the bee.  My 3 year old thought the story was particularly funny.  I did explain to them what typically happens in a bull fight so that they could understand why Ferdinand’s behavior was so silly.
